Lt. Clifton started his career at the age of 19 with the Robbinsville Township Police Department, at that time Washington Township on January 22nd 2001 as a Communications Officer. During his tenure as a Communications Officer, Lt. Clifton attended the Ocean County Police Academy night class # 18 from September 2003-May 2004. Upon graduating from the Police Academy, Lt. Clifton worked for the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department as a Class 2 special officer, who sponsored him through the Police Academy while continuing to serve Washington Township as a Communications Officer.
On June 28th 2004, Lt. Clifton was promoted to Patrolman with the Washington Township Police Department. Lt. Clifton was assigned to the Patrol Division and during his tenure as a Patrolman he served in multiple units being Firearms, Field Training, Domestic Violence Liaison. Additionally, Lt. Clifton served as an instructor for the Mercer County Police Academy along with being assigned to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit.
On July 1st 2016, Lt. Clifton was promoted to Sergeant. Lt. Clifton was assigned to the Patrol Division where he oversaw a squad of patrolmen Lt. Clifton continued to be a part of the Firearms Unit, Field Training Program and Domestic Violence Liaison. On August 27th 2016, Lt. Clifton was transferred into the Criminal Investigation’s Unit to take on the role of Detective Sergeant.
On March 12th 2017, Lt. Clifton was promoted to Lieutenant. Lt. Clifton was assigned to oversee the Patrol Division along with the Communication’s Division. Lt. Clifton continued to oversee the Firearms Unit, Domestic Violence Liaison Unit, the newly formed Bicycle Patrol Unit and the manages the Robbinsville Police Training Facility.
On February 15th 2022, Lt. Clifton was assigned to oversee the Criminal Investigation’s Unit. Lt. Clifton was also assigned to oversee the Robbinsville Township Police Department fleet.
On January 9th 2023, Lt. Clifton was transferred to oversee the Administrative Division which includes the Traffic Bureau, records, budgetary responsibilities. Lt. Clifton continues to oversee the police department fleet, Firearms Unit and manage the Robbinsville Police Training Facility.
